Our Equine Partners

Meet our equine partners and find out a little about their lives here at Quinta de Estevianas.

Musa.

Born 2011, our elegant, sweet and slightly sassy mare loves to full gallop, so hold on to your hats, as this will be a fun ride.  She is slow to trust, but once committed she is a great riding partner although her commitment to that partnership does require lots of consideration of her feelings.  In the time since she joined us here, we have seen her confidence grow alongside her muscles and fitness level, such that she can bounce with energy when allowed to.

Whisper.

Born 2023, our Belgian Draft is both a delight and a little (big) terror!  She adores attention, at times allowing her jealousy to run a little high if she doesn’t get it.  Nothing phases her; she’s great with children, crowds, interacting, being brushed and, quite simply,  enjoys being the centre of attention. Her only challenge is moving faster than a steady walk, but she gets there with a bit of encouragement.

Revel:

Born 2020, our incredibly loyal, friendly, dependable pony has all of our hearts completely stolen.  He approaches every new situation with curiosity and excitement, loving music and parties.  He is incredibly gentle with his little riders, and is a perfect gentleman to humans and equines alike.  He teaches our new equines their manners, and our expectations, with kind firmness, making our lives so much easier! Good things definitely come in small packages!

Espirito.

Born 2024, Espirito is Revel’s first protege and is shining because of it. He is a quick learner, respectful and keen to prove himself.  He looks keenly for direction, and wants to please. Both he and Revel are so well behaved, they have earned the right to free graze, fence-free, always staying within the area we have given them. To make him even more adorable, he  loves a lovely bum scratch.

Roma

In the horse herd, Roma leads the group with inner calm and confidence. She is extremely affectionate and loves human attention and, as a typical draft breed, gets too close sometimes. However we adore her clumsy friendliness, and her otherwise  respectful and patient manner. She’s a sturdy but sometimes a lazy girl when you’re riding; you could say she’s a bit of a dreamer!  She joined us this year heavily pregnant with Roxy and has since become a wonderful mum.

Roxy

After many anxious and sleepless nights that we spent in anticipation of her arrival during particularly stormy weather, to our relief, Roxy sensibly arrived during a break in the weather on the night of 7th April 2025. She was born a very big, healthy foal and has since developed a big personality; confident, curious, friendly but also well-mannered and a good learner. It’s exciting watching our first foal born on the farm develop beautifully, watched over by our little herd of mares.

Boo

Boo is so-named due to her unique call that startled us several times during late night feeds. Having said that, there’s nothing scary about her! She’s a steady, kind and affectionate girl and often a favourite with our riders who are surprised by the ease of her gait in the saddle (something mules are known for).  She’s aware of her popularity with visitors which gives her a little bit of a sense of entitlement when interacting with the other mules.

Ghost

Ghost is one of our mules that’s still in training following a bit of a difficult start in life. He’s a sweet boy that has lacked some early training and groundwork, and lost trust in humans following a bungled home castration at some point before we got him.  He has been successfully treated by our wonderful local vet, and is now settling well.  He has come to love his new home, his new equine and human companions, and is learning to trust again.  He goes on treks with the others but isn’t taking rides yet!  He’s nearly taking us on his back, and will be ready for Spring 2026.

Georgie

Georgie is a stunning, strong mule, and extremely affectionate. She won our hearts the minute we met her! She is used to human love and company, and is an easy ride. She has recently shifted from being shoed with irons, to going barefoot, so is developing her barefoot hoof strength before joining us on the treks.

Benji

Benji is a very special mule. He is our biggest and strongest, but also our most troubled. Beautiful in nature once you know him, he has inherited problems from over-working and actions from his past owners that have broken his trust.  His ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures tell his story, showing the progressive improvements in his health, happiness and wellbeing. We are over the moon with our good news boy! He is highly intelligent, and we believe him to be what is phrased a “suck-egg” mule. This makes training both harder and more rewarding! He is definitely a much happier mule here with us, and we believe he should be trek-ready for 2026.

Izzy

Izzy is our first mule and will always be our most special girl. She has been with us the longest, and is the most polite, well mannered of them all. Every mule in the herd wants her to be their best friend! She is more shy of strangers which means she is only ridden by trek leaders. Over time, and as she grows out of adolescence, she will come to enjoy other riders.
